Discount codes
Make discount codes with dates, use limits, packages, billing periods and new-customer rules, and see how each code was used.
Discount codes are codes customers type on the order page to get money off: a percentage, a fixed amount or free months, for the first payment, some months or every payment. This screen has every rule a code can have and the usage report. The quick form on Billing makes simple codes.
Where: Server Admin › Billing › Discount codes
The price with a code is always worked out on the server: on the order page when the customer clicks Apply, at checkout (Stripe or PayPal), and on the invoices.
Make a code
- Fill in the form at the top (see below).
- Click Make code.
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Code | 3–30 letters, numbers, - or _, for example SPRING20. Customers can type it in any case. |
| Discount | The value and its kind: % off, an amount off in your billing currency, or months free (1–24). |
| For | the first payment, some months (1–36) or every payment. Free months always start the subscription. |
| Used on | Only on the publisher's own server: Hosting orders, Licence orders or Both. |
| Uses in all (0 = unlimited) | How many times the code can be used altogether. |
| Uses per customer (0 = unlimited) | How many times one customer (by email address or account) can use it. |
| Starts / Ends | The first and last day the code works. |
| Only for these packages (none ticked = all) | Limits the code to some packages. |
| Only for these licence plans (none ticked = all) | Licence codes only: limits the code to some plans. |
| Billing periods (none ticked = all) | Monthly and / or Yearly. Packages are sold monthly today. |
| New customers only | Refuses an email address that already has an account, a paid order or a paid invoice. |
| Note (only you see it) | A reminder for yourself, up to 100 characters. |
Note: Stripe's own checkout page can't check a limit per customer, a start date or "new customers only". A code with one of those rules therefore only works when typed on the order page; customers can't type it on Stripe's page.
How a code is applied
| Where | What happens |
|---|---|
| Order page | The customer types the code and clicks Apply: the page shows what the code gives and the first payment, or why it can't be used. |
| Card payments (Stripe) | The checkout gets the code's Stripe coupon; free months become free trial days. |
| PayPal | The PayPal plan is priced with the discount for the months it lasts; free months become a trial. |
| Invoices made by hand | Type a code in Discount code when you make an invoice on Billing: it adds a discount line. |
| Invoices of paid orders | While the code still applies, each numbered invoice shows the full price and a "Discount" line. |
| Licence order page | On the publisher's own server, /licence has a Discount code field for licence codes. |
Change or end a code
- Click the pencil icon (Edit) next to a code to change its rules: use limits, dates, packages, periods, plans, New customers only and the note. The discount itself can't change once the code is made.
- Click the × icon (End) and confirm to end a code. It can no longer be used; its uses stay in the report.
Usage report
| Part | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Codes | Each code with its discount, rules and uses (out of the limit). |
| Usage report | Per code: uses that are paid, checkouts still open, the discount given on first payments and the last use. |
| Latest uses | The newest 100 uses: when, the code, where (hosting order, licence order or invoice), the customer, the discount and whether it is paid. |
