Site checks
Each website is crawled from the server on a schedule to find broken links, mixed content, certificate and redirect problems and more.
Site checks crawl each of your websites from the server on a schedule — weekly unless you change it — and list what needs fixing: broken links, mixed content, certificate and redirect problems, large pages and images, missing titles and descriptions, and redirect chains. Each check shows what is new and what was fixed since the check before, and you get a weekly email when something changed.
Where: Control Panel › Websites › Site checks
Check a website
- Click the website in the picker at the top. Websites with problems show how many.
- Under Schedule, choose how often to Check this website: Weekly, Daily or Off. The change is saved at once; the next check is then within the chosen period.
- Click Check now to check it at once. The check starts within a minute and can take up to 10 minutes; reload the page to see the result.
Note: a website can be checked again with Check now 10 minutes after the last check started.
What is checked
The check starts at the website's home page (https when the website has a certificate) and follows its links on the
same address only — the www. or bare twin counts as another address.
| Problem | What it means |
|---|---|
| Broken links | a page or file on your website answers with an error (4xx or 5xx) or not at all |
| Broken external links | a link to another website is gone (404, 410, 5xx or no answer); at most 100 external links are checked, with a HEAD request |
| Mixed content | an https page loads an image, script, style or frame over plain http — browsers block or warn about it |
| No working HTTPS | nothing answers on port 443, or the secure connection fails |
| Certificate not trusted | the certificate is for another name, or its chain is incomplete |
| Certificate ends soon | the certificate ends within 14 days, or has ended |
| Old TLS versions accepted | the website still accepts TLS 1.0 or 1.1 |
| No redirect to HTTPS | http:// does not redirect to https:// |
| No www redirect | both www.example.com and example.com show the website instead of one redirecting to the other |
| Redirect chains | a link goes through two or more redirects before the page |
| Large pages | a page's HTML is larger than 1 MB |
| Large images | an image is larger than 1 MB |
| Missing page title | a page has no <title> |
| Missing meta description | a page has no <meta name="description"> |
Each problem shows its address, a detail (the status code, the size, the redirects) and the page it was Found on.
Limits
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Pages | 500 per check |
| Speed | 2 requests a second (slower when robots.txt asks for a Crawl-delay) |
| Time | 10 minutes per check |
robots.txt |
respected: pages it disallows for all robots (User-agent: *) are not fetched |
When a limit ends the check early, the result says so; the problems found until then are shown.
Note: the checks come from the server itself and only reach public addresses — and your own websites on the server. They never reach private networks.
New and fixed
Every check is compared with the one before it: problems that were not there before have a New label, and problems that are gone are listed under Fixed since the check before. History lists the checks with their pages, problems, new and fixed counts; click View to see an older check. The newest 20 checks of each website are kept.
Summary email
With Email me a weekly summary when something changes on, you get at most one email a week per website, and only when the problems differ from those in the last summary: the new and fixed problems (up to 10 of each) and a link to this screen. Nothing is sent while nothing changes.
