Site templates

Save a website as a template and start new websites from it, or from your host's shared templates, with the address, title and email filled in.

Site templates let you save one of your websites — its files, its database and its settings — and start new websites from it in one step. Your host may also offer shared templates. The website you saved from isn't touched.

Where: Control Panel › Websites › Site templates

Save a website as a template

  1. Under Save a website as a template, choose the Website.
  2. Enter a Template name.
  3. Tick Include uploaded files (images, media) if the template should carry them. Without it, wp-content/uploads, uploads and storage/app/public are left out.
  4. Click Save template.

The template is kept in your account, in the templates folder of your home folder, readable by your account only. It counts towards your disk space. Your plan may limit how big a template can be; the screen shows the limit.

Note: a template never holds your database password: wp-config.php and .env are stored with their database settings emptied. The new website gets its own database and password.

Make a new website from a template

  1. Under New website from a template, choose the Template. Shared ones are marked shared by your host. Use in the list picks a template too.
  2. Enter the New address after https://: a subdomain of one of your domains, or another domain you own.
  3. Enter the Site title and the Admin email (your account's email is filled in).
  4. Click Create website.

What happens:

  • The address is added as a new website, so your plan's domain limit applies.
  • When the template has a database, the new website gets its own new database (your plan's database limit applies), and wp-config.php or .env is pointed at it.
  • The placeholders {{site_title}}, {{admin_email}} and {{site_url}} in the database and in wp-config.php / .env are filled in, and the template's old address becomes the new one.
  • For WordPress, the site title (blogname), the admin email and new security keys are set, and the address is changed everywhere, also inside saved settings.
  • A free SSL certificate is tried at once. If the domain doesn't point to the server yet, the message says so and free SSL follows by itself once it does (see DNS setup).

If anything goes wrong, the new domain and database are removed again.

Delete a template

Click Delete next to one of your own templates. Websites made from it stay as they are. Shared templates can only be deleted by your host.

If something fails

Message What to do
"the template is bigger than … MB" leave out the uploads, or ask your host for a bigger limit
"Enter a name." give the template a name
"Enter a valid email address." correct the admin email
"No such template." the template was deleted; reload the page
